This piece of news caught our eyes. If true, then KL will be among the first cities in the world in this region to have free WiFi connectivity. So, bring your WiFi devices and stay connected!

Packet One to deploy 3,500 WiFi hotposts in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd intends to deploy 3,500 WiFi hotspots in Kuala Limpur over a few phases in collaboration with KL City Hall and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Abdul Hakim Borhan said this project, known as the Kuala Lumpur Wireless Metropolitan, was part of the government’s initiative to spur demand for broadband.
“This initiative targets to achieve 90% household broadband penetration in the Klang Valley by 2010,” he said at the launch of the project yesterday.
The project also aimed to provide citizens with free 512-kilobits per second broadband connectivity for two years.
“We would be the first city in the world to be deployed on the WiMAX 2.3GHz (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) backhaul infrastructure,” he said.
To date, 200 WiFi hotspots have been set up in the KL City Centre in conjunction with the World Congress on Information Technology 2008 to be held from May 18 to 22.
